About
Guieu and Thompson published and edited the Southerner during the 1840s. The first issue of their paper circulated on June 7, 1840, under the banner The Friends of the South and of Southern Institutions are our friends – their enemies are our enemies.
The Democratic publication sought to give attention to both the political and civil activities of Augusta residents. During its run, the paper was published out of the offices of the Augusta Constitutionalist and cost one dollar per year.
